Services

Physical Therapy One is your premier full service physical therapy private practice. Our staff is trained to efficiently rehabilitate a variety of conditions.

Unlike many other facilities that provide a wide variety of rehabilitation services like O.T. (Occupational Therapy), and S.T. (Speech Therapy), Physical Therapy One has chosen to focus on treatment of specific diagnoses related to our specialty training. The following are brief descriptions of the services provided at Physical Therapy One:

SPECIALTY PROGRAMS:

Orthopedic/Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation:
Physical Therapy One has specialized in the treatment of non-operative and operative conditions in the Kalamazoo area since 1997. The professionals at Physical Therapy One evaluate and set treatment programs designed to return an individual to a prior level of functional mobility. Individual goals are always part of the overall program and care is taken to meet specific goals set by both the patient and the therapist. The therapists at Physical Therapy One provide cutting edge treatments for all types of musculoskeletal conditions of the entire spine and extremities. Common referrals include: oseteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, sports and job related injuries, tendonitis, bursitis, and pain syndromes. We provide excellent pre- and post-operative surgical care. Physical Therapy One is the facility of choice for the area's finest physicians.

Vestibular Rehabilitation (balance, dizziness, and vertigo rehabilitation): Many people suffer from dizziness or vertigo. Physical Therapy One has a specialist who specializes vertigo rehabilitation. Common problems that can be treated include: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), labrinthitis, vestibular neuritis, dizziness, decreased balance, spinning sensation, and motion sensitivity. Specific exercises to strengthen the vestibular system are combined with patient education, safety awareness, strengthening, particle repositions maneuvers (Eply), manual therapy, postural control and balance exercises to provide a comprehensive plan of care. Special techniques to affect the sensory and balance center of the brain and limbs are important components in this rehabilitation program. Our vestibular specialist has taken advanced level clinical training from leaders in this field from Johns Hopkins University, Emory University, and the University of Southern California.

Wellness One: Wellness One is a program designed for our patients who have completed their physical therapy and would like to continue exercising at our facility. Our Portage location is only open for former patients. The Stadium Drive location is open to the general public. We have extensive cardiac equipment with a cardio theatre for your enjoyment at both locations with free weights and weight machines. Programs are monitored by one of our exercise physiologists. A Certified Personal Trainer is on staff at the Stadium Drive location for an additional charge.

ASTYM: Physical Therapy One is proud to be one of the only providers in Michigan of the ASTYM system. The ASTYM system is a rehabilitation technique with documented effectiveness in the treatment of repetitive stress injuries and for conditions resulting in scar tissue build up. The ASTYM system is an advance soft tissue technique that is scientifically based to promote correct healing of connective tissue when combined with traditional therapies. This non-invasive treatment has effectively enhanced the rehabilitation of a wide variety of musculoskeletal disorders.

REFFERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Currently, the State of Michigan requires a referral for physical therapy services. Forty-three states possess what is called "Direct Access" for physical therapy services which means a consumer of physical therapy can see their physical therapist without a referral. A referral can be made by a Medical Doctor (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Doctor Podiatric Medicine (DPM), a dentist (DDS), or a physician's assistant (PAC). Physical Therapy One can accept a faxed or original copy of the referral. Without an appropriate referral, a physical therapist can only perform an evaluation and may not render any treatment. The Michigan Physical Therapy Association is working with legislators to change this requirement.

If you feel that you may be in the need of physical therapy and you do not have a referral, you may make an appointment for an assessment only. After the assessment, your physician will be contacted for an appropriate referral, if deemed necessary.

After every evaluation, a plan of care is dictated and sent to your referring health care provided that will include our evaluation findings, goals to be met, planned treatment ideas, and frequency of visits. This plan of care is a regulatory component of the rehabilitation services and also serves as documented communication between health professionals.
